What you will learn
  • Steal Kristi’s slouch-to-power-pose reset for before a hard call.
  • Learn the three beliefs behind Mel Fisher’s 16-year, $450M hunt.
  • Try the gratitude habit Kristi used to survive newborn triplets.
  • Use a momentum-prompt question to force one bold move today.
  • Borrow the alter-ego glasses trick from The Alter Ego Effect.

Kristi and Kelcie open with the P in their PMR reset tool: physiology. Kristi has Kelcie slouch, breathe shallow, and picture a sales call, then reset with shoulders back and a deep breath before picturing a call to a best friend. Kristi’s own daily cues include jumping on a mini trampoline, a Tom Ferry move where she throws her arms overhead and claps, and a private “power move” she won’t demonstrate on camera.

For the mindset section, Kristi tells the story of a man from the book Cues who shrank all his work shirts before a new job, rolled up the sleeves to hide it, and got dubbed the guy who “gets things done.” He leaned into the label, was named the company’s strategic problem solver, increased his income by 300%, and started reporting directly to the CEO. Kelcie ties it to The Alter Ego Effect by Todd Herman, where a pair of non-prescription glasses became his cue to switch on a performer persona.

Kristi walks through Mel Fisher’s 16-year hunt for a sunken Spanish galleon, a search that ended with treasure worth more than $450 million and a daily mantra of “today’s the day.” She credits Tom Ferry with distilling three beliefs that carried Fisher through it: it’s out there, I’m the one who can do it, and it’s going to be worth it. Kelcie pairs that with the book 10x Is Easier Than 2x, reframing burnout as a signal to do fewer things at a higher level rather than more things at once.

For daily rituals, Kristi describes an 11-year-old Instagram gratitude habit from when her triplets were babies, including one post that was just a photo of a dark room captioned “grateful I get to go to bed.” Kelcie adds giving one specific compliment a day, asking a momentum-prompt question like “what’s one bold move I can make today,” and deliberately making time to laugh, pointing to Kevin Hart as her go-to.

About this one

Welcome back to the Take It and Run podcast. We are your host, Christine Kelcie, and we are super excited to talk about your energy, your beliefs, and your daily focus. This title of this episode is called Shift It to Lift It. And what we want to know is what’s been draining your energy lately, right? What would it look like to take your power back? Many of the conversations we’re having with professionals right now is about how difficult it is in the industry, depending on what industry you’re in. The sales cycle is harder, it’s slower, and it’s taking more energy than ever to stay in the game. So that’s what we’re gonna dig into today, Kelcie.

Yeah. And it’s really not just about the market, right? You guys sell real estate, but you’re people. There’s other things that drain us. Uh that’s going on inside of us, right? There’s burnout, doubt, discouragement. So today’s episode is all about taking your power back. The most important thing that you will walk away with today is knowing this. You may not control the market, but you will always control your mindset. And Kristi and I love the book Limitless by Jim Quick. So definitely a big plug for him. But one of our favorite quotes is if knowledge is power, then learning is your superpower. So just have that focus today in this 20 minutes that we’re together. Maybe it’s 17 if you read it on 1.5 or listen to it on 1.5.

So guilty of that. We can barely listen to books at regular speed now. Uh, but the episode today, we’re gonna walk you through a reset tool that we called a PMR, and it’s an acronym, but we’ll get into it. You will learn and you can immediately apply it to shift your state, whether that’s physically, mentally, or emotionally. So here’s the deal: when your body is in a slump, your mindset follows. And so if you’re with us on YouTube, I’m gonna have you kind of look and follow along. And if you’re driving, I just want you to mentally think about this, right? So if your body’s in a slump, your mindset follows. And the reverse is also true. So let’s talk about physiology. And what is physiology? It’s your physical state, or think of it as your posture, your breathing, your body language, your tone, your facial expressions, which by the way, funny side note, uh, I was working on creating a Hey Jen avatar, and I am very expressive. So we actually decided that there’s not going to be an AI, Kristi. There’s only going to be the original because I can’t stop fluttering my eyes, shaking my head, moving. I’m I’m much too apparently crazy in my physical state. But your body sends messages to your brain. So we’re gonna do an exercise together, and Kelcie’s gonna follow along with me. And I want you to slouch.

I was already digged. I want you to slouch, and I want you to kind of breathe shallowly, and I’m kind of putting a sad face on and maybe even a little bit of a frown. And you can also hear my voice is just a little bit tired. And I want you to imagine making a sales call. Yeah, right? Like, is that does that sound fun? No. No. I mean, does that sound I mean, could you imagine if I called you up like this? If I was just like, hey, Kelcie. Is that what a lot of your coaching calls are like, anyways? Nowadays. You know what is interesting, Kelcie? Uh I actually can tell how my clients are like from the moment they come into the call because we do our calls via Zoom. I can actually see physical state and expression like excitement or or you know, discouragement and depression. So so we all know what that feels like. Now I want you to shift it. Okay. I want you to put your shoulders back. I want you to sit up tall. I want you to smile, right? I want you to like just think of something really exciting. Think of something funny, right? And now take a deep breath. And now imagine calling your best friend. Right. With the most exciting news. You found the best taco spot.

There’s such a difference. Um, you know, I have a physical routine that I do every single morning that is just to get my physiology like in place. There are things, there are cues um that help me trick my brain, even if I have low energy, but that your physical state is so I have some rituals and things that I do. I have cues like music and other things, but I have a mini trampoline. So a lot of times, if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you’ll see that a lot of times I just get up and I jump on my trampoline for just even a minute if I need to. Um, I will do, I learned this from Tom Ferry, but you put your arms straight up in the air, just walk around your office, clap, kind of get excited. There’s so many things that you can do to trick your physiology to help you get where you need to. So a couple of the cues that I would say is like, if you need to make calls, if you are not excited for the day, you should definitely do something physical to get you there. Go for a walk, right? When your energy dumps, get up, go for a five-minute walk. I like to jump on my mini trampoline or a rebounder, lift my arms up in the air. I like to tap myself on the chest. And something that we learned from Tony Robbins, because Tony Robbins says, you know, emotion is created by motion, is I have a couple little power moves that I do. I’m not going to share them with you because if you saw me doing them, then you’d be like, oh, Kristi’s putting herself in a physical state to, you know, for high energy. But you should have a power move. You should have something that you do to help you kind of trick your mind if your mind is not there. Your physiology absolutely can impact how you show up on calls and on appointments and in life in general. Let’s talk about a story real quick, Kelcie. So I was reading a book called Cues recently. And one of the examples she shared, this is so fascinating. There was a gentleman who had just gotten a new job and um he was he washed all of his laundry to get ready to start this job. And when he put on his shirts, he realized that he had shrank all of his shirts, right? Can you imagine the horror? Like you’re gonna show up to your first day and you don’t have anything to wear. So simple, all he did was he rolled up the sleeves, right? So he was like, hopefully, if I roll up the sleeves, no one’s gonna notice that I shrank all my shirts. So it was very, very interesting. He quickly got dubbed in his new job, the guy that just gets things done. Yeah, he’s a roll up your sleeves type of guy. And he started to hear that and he was like, okay, that’s interesting. Nobody knows. Like in his mind, he’s like, nobody knows that my shirts are too small, but yeah, I’m a I’m a definitely dig in, get your things done. They started saying, Oh, you are a problem solver. He quickly got promoted. 300, he increased his income by 300% and was directly reporting to the CEO in like such a short time. And he talks about it, it was just this physical cue. Like he became the person that gets things done. They named him, I think, the strategic problem solver for the company, all because everyone around him took this physical cue of like rolling up his sleeves to get things done. He internalized it, became that person. It impacted his income and it skyrocketed his, you know, where he was at in this company. Isn’t that crazy?

Yeah. And it makes me think of um the alter ego book. Todd what’s Herman. Yeah, Todd Herman. So he talks about uh he used a pair of non-prescription glasses as a physical trigger for his ego. So think of if you haven’t read the book, think of Superman and Clark Kent, right? And um he would put them on and he activated the performer version of himself, and that’s just such a powerful method of getting into the right mindset, and it also I think helps people to know that you don’t have to be on all the time, especially as salespeople. That’s where burnout comes from as well, as as well as taking on too much that you can handle and all of that, but you don’t have to be the performer all the time. So, what cue do you have that makes you go into that mode? One thing, like Chrissy said, if you’re watching or whether you’re driving, you can do this. What I suggest is visualize a person who does your job at a kick-ass level. What do they look like? What are they wearing? Are they wearing combat boots or are they wearing heels? Is their hair up? Is their hair down? Are they wearing a blazer or are they wearing a branded tee? And it could be or are they wearing glasses or it whatever it is, it’s personal to what you visualize. We know agents that put on their listing appointment blazer or their signature shoes before presentation. It’s just something that makes them feel powerful. They don’t wait to feel confident. They dress confident and let the physiology follow. Um I like that.

They don’t wait for the confidence. You know, they just they make it happen. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. And it’s same with not just like what you put on or or where. It’s like Kristi was talking about earlier, you know, whether you’re slumping or or standing up tall, like people who sit or stand in power poses before stressful events should greater confidence and better performance in numerous studies. And this isn’t this isn’t new information, but something that I’ve done several times, whether it’s business or or I’m going on a date, or my best friend is going into labor and I’m her doula, and I forget everything that I was supposed to have in my brain to help her with, I take a moment, go to the bathroom, and go in a power pose for 30 seconds to 60 seconds. And I focus on holding that pose. You know, if you do yoga or maybe Pilates, but specifically yoga, you’ll know the influence of holding a pose, not just stretching, but holding a pose. It’s the same thing. Uh it can increase your testosterone and decrease your cortisol levels. And we all know that you don’t want to have cortisol levels, high cortisol levels, right? Um, so thanks thanks to the power of TikTok and Instagram. Right, exactly. You don’t need a cortisol drink, you just need to hold a power pose. Uh so ask yourself what small cue could help you activate that powerful alter ego. Not to say that you’re not powerful at other times, but you know, those glasses that you put on, those shoes that you put on, what’s what what’s that pose that you can do?

It reminds me of um to kind of tie up the section on physiology, it reminds me of like when you watch a basketball game. If you don’t know this, Kelcie’s a massive Suns fan. And Kelcie, when they go up to shoot a free throw, what can you say about physiology there? What do athletes do? Yeah, they’re all like and they have a lot of them have their own ritual, you know, and some draw from the crowd. You could see it. Some draw from the crowd, the energy, and some do what they can to block it out. And everybody’s different in how they get into their moment of where they need to succeed, where everything’s on the line. Uh, but yeah, each of them have their ritual.

Yeah, it’s pretty cool. So, okay, that’s the P in our PMR. And let’s talk about the M, which is mindset. So I want you to think mindset drives momentum. Your mindset is the operating system, right? If it’s corrupted, the best tactics and strategies won’t run. And so um earlier this year, Tom Ferry shared with me the story of Mel Fisher, and this was such a fascinating story. I actually went and read a ton about Mel Fisher because it was so inspiring. So if you’re not familiar with Mel Fisher, he had a 16-year treasure hunt, right? And by the way, that wasn’t like his first career. Uh, but Mel Fisher searched for this sunken Spanish, you know, galleon for over 16 years. But here’s one of the coolest things. Every day he would get up and he’d go out and he’d say, Today’s the day. So if you do a little search on Mel Fisher, one of the things you’re gonna find is this mindset of today’s the day. But hold on, people. 16 years, right? Most people would have given up after 16 days, 16 months, 16 minutes, right? But for 16 years, he kept going through storms, through setbacks, through lawsuits. And eventually he found this treasure worth over 450 million dollars. And I start to think about that. I was like, you know what, that’s us right now, right? Like some of us are out there showing up, making calls, doing open houses. By the way, yesterday it was 118 degrees here in the Phoenix metro area, showing homes in 118 degrees when a seller turns off the air and your buyer’s like, yeah, this isn’t the one. It reminds me of Mel Fisher of like, am I, am I, is this ever gonna happen? Am I ever gonna help this family find a home or sell a home? Right. It just every deal seems right now like it’s taking longer. Every lead needs more nurturing, every buyer needs more reassuring. We’re treasure hunting in our own regard. And so just think I want you to think about that. Now, what Tom helped us learn from Mel Fisher is that there were three empowering beliefs. How did he go on for so many years, right, with not finding this treasure that he was looking for? Well, the first one, he believed that it was out there. And so that’s the first one that I’d have everybody who’s listening, Kelcie. Like, it’s out there. The deal exists. There are people who need to buy and sell real estate. There are people that need your widget, your gadget, your insurance, whatever it is that you’re selling as a professional. Um, or, you know, it’s out there your healthy body, right? Your your next breakthrough. So just remember, that’s the first one. It’s out there. The next belief is I’m the one who can do it, right? I have the ability. I am capable, right? So it exists, it’s out there, I’m capable. You’ve done this before. I’ve done this before, right? Own your value. And then the third one is that it’s gonna be worth it, right? I mean, you don’t go out on the sea for 16 years straight if you don’t believe that it’s gonna be worth it. And so think long term. Third quarter may be difficult, fourth quarter may be difficult. You know, this week, this month may be difficult, this day may be difficult, but think long term. What will this mean for you? What will this mean for your family? What happens if you stay consistent during the hard season, right? And how will it pay off?

I wonder how much of that $450 million he gets to keep. I just can’t can’t help but think about that. I’ll I’ll Google that later. There’s a really cool there’s a really cool museum down in Key West, all about and he has this whole movement. Like there’s this whole today’s the day movement pretty exciting and powerful. That’s cute. Yeah. So these these three empowering beliefs that you’re going through, it just it made me think there’s so many messages out there. You know, it’s it’s out there. That first one is the deals exist. You know, I think about what’s the opposite message that we hear a lot. Uh there’s no inventory. Uh nobody wants to sell right now because they all want to keep their 2.5 rates, and uh buyers are just so hard to work with right now. Like, how often do you hear that? How often have you said that? How much do you believe that? And in truth, there are deals, there are opportunities, there are people who want to buy and sell. So I’m just I guess reiterating the how important it is to use the language that supports these empowering beliefs. Like Kristi said, if your mindset, you can hear all this and just think, like, yeah, but you know, you don’t know my market. You know, I pulled up the MLS and there’s only three active listings in my local area.

Well, most of them have like it it depends. There’s a couple, there’s a couple markets, but for the vast majority of them, they have a surplus. Like it’s a four and a half month supply of inventory. So nothing, the it would be nothing selling. Nothing selling, yeah. And so it’s like, okay, what are you doing about it? You know. But one of the reasons why I believe it’s hard to take on these empowering beliefs and install them into our lives is that we’re so crowded with other projects and other things that you can be doing. And one of the things that helps me in, I was uh copywriting for a while. And one of the things that helped me when I felt like I was drowning in too many clients, too much stuff, but I was afraid to let anybody go because there’s money, you know, there’s opportunity, there’s experience. I read the book 10x is easier than 2x by Tom or Tom Hardy, Ben Hardy, and Dan Sullivan. And they talk about how 10x is fundamentally 10xing your business. While it sounds harder to do more, it’s not doing more. It’s fundamentally about quality versus quantity. The quality of your freedoms determines the results that you achieve. And 2x is taking more time, effort, and resources in the long run, while 10x prioritizes a handful of high impact actions to create uh exponential results. So it’s it’s essentially too long, didn’t read, zeroing in on where your superpower is, what you like to do, and saying no to everything else. 2x thinking is about doing more, 10x thinking is about doing what only you can do, which helps to avoid burnout and imposter syndrome because a lot of times maybe you shouldn’t be doing what you’re doing, you know, but you go into survival mode and it isn’t about surviving the market, it’s about becoming the version of yourself that leads in the market, right? We want to be those impactful agents or whatever your main business is. So I I you want to ask yourself just to wrap up this segment of mindset if you fully believed that you were the right agent for this moment, how would you act differently?

Yeah, that you were worthy you were capable. Oh, I love that. So that’s our uh our P and our M. Let’s get into the R, which is the rituals or the daily rituals that reset you. So it’s the little things that you do daily, they add up, they shape your energy, they shape your confidence and your performance. So we’re gonna go through four resets that you can do this week. And I’m gonna share with you some examples of some that I’ve personally used in my life. And Kelcie might have some that she’s gonna share too. So the first one that I would have you contemplate on trying is a gratitude reset. So it’s really cool. I I love this book called The Happiness Advantage. I feel like we’re talking, we’re dropping a lot of books today, but that’s because we’re we’re we’re talking about you know a really big topic. But there’s a book called The Happiness Advantage by Sean Aker. And he specifically is a researcher of happiness and he shares about this idea of 21 days of gratitude and how it rewires your brain for positivity and it increases dopamine. And so when my triplets were little, so we have three children. Our youngest, we call them the, we call them the babies, although they’re 12 now. Um, but they’re all 11 months apart. And there there was a time when they were babies and in diapers, it was so exhausting. And um, I was fairly new to Instagram at the time. So this is like 11 years ago, and I just knew that I needed to focus on gratitude. I was like, you know what? I’m just gonna focus on gratitude. And I I set a challenge for myself. I said, I am going to do a gratitude post on Instagram. And at the time, you know, Instagram at the time was everything had to have a photo. So it was different than Facebook because you had to have a photo with it. And some days, Kelcie, it was so hard. Some of the ones that really Fundamentally changed me that year. One one post, and oh, by the way, I used the hashtag 365grateful jinx. And it was fun because I actually went back to it when we were preparing for this podcast and I looked at some of them. And there was one that was just a picture of like black. And I remember it, I had the lights were out, and I just like took a picture, and I think it said, I’m grateful that I get to go to bed. I was so, I was so tired. And then there was another one where we had three high chairs, and at this stage, the babies were throwing food. So if you’re a parent, you know that your kids are gonna go through this phase where they throw food. And I had the three high chairs in the photo and a picture of the ground, and there was just like rice everywhere, you know. And luckily we had dogs and the dogs helped. But I wrote, I’m grateful that someday they won’t throw their food on the floor. Um yeah, grateful for future. So if if if you’re struggling right now, gratitude is probably one of the easiest ways. Like, um, and Sean specifically speaks of to the fact that you can’t say you’re grateful for the same thing. Like you’ve got to find something different every time. Um, but it does rewire your brain for positivity and will increase dopamine, which will help your mood.

Mm-hmm. Yep. And I love before I get into uh my next one, the thing that I really liked about Instagram is that it was trackable. And I think as we’re talking about daily rituals, especially pertaining to hopefully resetting your mindset, is to have something to track what you’re doing. Like remember bullet journals, uh, those are fantastic. Or even if you just keep a notes app of what you did. Um, so knowing that, maybe, maybe if you’re somebody that likes to do that, know that as we go into these next ones because you want to make note of these things and look back and see, oh no, yeah, it did make a difference. And also figure on accountability, maybe it’s on a calendar, you know. But uh, so my my next suggestion is to give a specific compliment every day to somebody, whether it’s a client, teammate, friend. It doesn’t just make them feel good, it really does increase oxytocin in you, the happy, the happy feeling, right? Um like if you’re somebody like I work from home, so some days I don’t even two days in a row, I don’t even leave the house. Um, but you can call or you can that’s that’s that’s what why I thought having the tracker is so helpful because you have something visual in front of you telling you, I haven’t done this yet. I gotta go to the store and I’ll tell the the cashier I like your glass. Yeah.

Activating your rats. So yeah, so you’re you’re absolutely right. Like let’s tie in one and two together. Knowing that you’re going to do to give a compliment, you’re gonna start looking for something to compliment. No, that’s exactly what happened. Like on my hardest days, like the the days where the babies like woke up and took their diapers off and decided to paint, they decided to paint their room with that, right? It’s hard to be grateful in moments like that. But when you’re wiring your brain and you’re looking for it, you activate your RAS, and and it’s 100%. I do love the tracker part of that. Um, number three, a momentum prompt, right? So this and this this will be super easy today with AI. You could easily have it help you come up with some ideas. But what you want to do is you want to, you want to prompt yourself. Like, think of it kind of as an affirmation, if you will, but it is a prompt and it’s a positive prompt. It’s like, what’s one bold move I can make today? Ask yourself the right questions. Tony Robbins always says, like, if you if you don’t like the answers, ask a better question. So ask yourself, what’s one action I can take today to build momentum? What’s one uncomfortable but powerful move I can make today? So just, you know, that prompt, that question to yourself. It could also be in the form of an affirmation. You want it to be positive, but it’s that encouraging, you know, momentum prop to momentum prompt to make progress today.

Nice. I like that. Journaling or or AI, whatever, yeah, whatever mode. Explore it. Our last one, I don’t know if it’s gonna surprise anybody. Laugh. You gotta laugh more. Even in a hard season, especially in a hard season, humor resets the nervous system. Humor is human connection. And those little short bursts of joy to just shortcut to building rapport. And so I suggest, you know, watch your favorite comedian on YouTube. Kevin Hart uh is always is always a blast, but you know, there’s different types of humor, there’s different levels of explicit, there’s you know, whatever it might be. But make time for that. It doesn’t all have to be serious or even like intense mindset training like we’ve been going through, but laughter. It’s important. Yeah, as we wrap up this one, ask yourself what’s one ritual that you’ll commit to this week, a little take it and run moment. What’s one ritual you’ll commit to this week to start your day on purpose? Alrighty. So that was our PMR physiology, um, mindset, and your your rituals, specifically your daily rituals. So your body is your shortcut to better energy, your beliefs are your fuel, or maybe even your friction to get started, and your rituals are your reset.

So here’s what we’d like you to do, right? We want you to pick your one power up. Choose one of these three for this week, right? So pick a physiological uh reset ritual, right? Maybe it’s a power pose or something you do physically to get you over the hump, right? Um, take something from Mel Fisher, a mindset note. Today’s the day, right? Right? Three beliefs, post them on your mirror or on your monitor or you know, somewhere where you’re gonna see them. Write them in your journal. Pick the gratitude, right? Something daily gratitude. Share three gratitudes, share them publicly. Text three people that you appreciate them. I love doing that one. By the way, when you compliment people and you’re grateful, it just feels really, really good. So pick your power up one of the three, get started.

Yep. And uh just to reiterate, you’re not powerless in this market. You are powerful in how you show up. So these aren’t just fluffy ideas, these aren’t just like us blowing sprinkles up your butt. These are real tools for the for the inner game, you know. You guys aren’t just this this isn’t the beginning of the game, fresh faced, ready to go. We’re past the halfway point of the year, and it’s hot, we’re sweaty, we’re tired. Some of us have shin splints. I get it, but you’re in the game and you have the power to show up ready to power through. And when you win that, everything shifts. So we gave you the tools, now it’s your turn to take it and run. Bye guys.

Questions

Before you ask.

What is the PMR reset tool Kristi and Kelcie describe?

PMR stands for Physiology, Mindset, and Rituals, the three levers Kristi and Kelcie say control energy and performance no matter what the market is doing. Physiology covers posture, breathing, and physical cues; mindset covers the beliefs you tell yourself; rituals are small daily habits like gratitude and compliments that keep both in check.

What are the three beliefs from the Mel Fisher story?

Mel Fisher searched for a sunken Spanish galleon for 16 years before finding treasure worth more than $450 million, and Tom Ferry traced his persistence to three beliefs: it’s out there, I’m the one who can do it, and it’s going to be worth it. Kristi applies the same three beliefs to agents working a slower, harder sales cycle.

How do I apply the PMR method to my own week?

Pick one reset instead of overhauling everything at once: a physical cue like a power pose or a short walk, a mindset note like Mel Fisher’s three beliefs written somewhere you’ll see them, or a daily ritual like gratitude, a specific compliment, or a momentum-prompt question. Kristi and Kelcie recommend committing to that single power-up for a week before adding another.
