Email Tiers
Quiet your inbox without deleting a thing. The mail that doesn’t need you moves out of the way — and you decide what that is.
- Desktop for setup
- Setup ~15 min
- Gmail only
- Weekly check
Fifteen minutes at a computer, then about five minutes a week.
On your phone right now? Get the file emailed to you and come back at your desk — the setup run needs a computer.
You need a Gmail account (this one is Gmail only, on purpose) and the Claude Desktop app, because the weekly check runs in Cowork. Bring a rough idea of which newsletters you’d be annoyed to lose — the setup run finds the rest.
Nothing here is destructive. Claude gets permission to read, label and archive: never to send, never to delete.

Unsubscribing until it hurts is a one-time fix.
Your inbox is buried again a few months later. This is different: we don't automate your email and we never delete anything. We move the mail that doesn't need you out of the way, you decide what that is, and it keeps learning your preferences — so it grows with you instead of going stale.
Gmail only. This is built specifically around Gmail's own filters — rock-solid on purpose, instead of fragile across a dozen email apps.
Step 1. What you'll end up with
| Lane | What lives there |
|---|---|
| Inbox | Stays put: action items, every email from a real person, and the few newsletters you'd hate to miss. This is the default — no filter match and it stays here. |
| 1 · Read Later | Skips the inbox: newsletters you want, just not mid-day. One click away in your sidebar. |
| 2 · FYI | Skips the inbox: receipts, confirmations, low-value bulk. Searchable, basically invisible. |
| 0 · Fix | You apply this one by hand: tag anything sorted wrong and the weekly check corrects it for good. |
Step 2. What you'll need
Step 3. Connect Gmail
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors.
- Find Gmail and click Connect.
- Sign in and approve.
What it can and can't do. It never sends and never deletes. Everything it does is reversible: add labels, move mail out of the inbox. You can undo all of it.
Step 4. Add the skill
The skill is the playbook that does the work. You add it once and it's available to every project.
- Find the Email Tiers skill file in the email above.
- In Claude, open Settings → Skills and click Add skill.
- Select the file. It now works across all your projects.
Step 5. Two quick questions
Answer these two and you've got everything you need for the instructions block in the next step.
- Which newsletters do you already know you want to keep? Don't list them all — setup scans your inbox and proposes a full list to review. Just name the few you'd be annoyed to lose; they go to Read Later, never FYI.
- When should the weekly check run? Monday morning is the recommendation. Any day works.
Step 6. Create your project and paste your instructions
Do this in the Cowork tab. Your skill is already added, so there are no files to attach.
- In Cowork, click New project and choose Start from scratch.
- Name it Email Tiers.
- Paste the block below into the Instructions field, filling in your two answers.
- Skip Add files, and click Create.
PROJECT — Email Tiers Run this with the Email Tiers skill. Gmail only. MY SETTINGS - Newsletters I want to keep (these go to "1 · Read Later", never "2 · FYI"): [the few you'd be annoyed to lose] - Weekly check runs: [Monday] morning THE LANES - INBOX — the default. Action items, mail from real people, and the newsletters above. No filter match means it stays here. - 1 · Read Later — newsletters I want, just not mid-day. - 2 · FYI — receipts, confirmations, low-value bulk. - 0 · Fix — I apply this by hand when something is sorted wrong. RULES - Never send and never delete. Label and archive only. Everything reversible. - Read my "0 · Fix" flags first each week and correct that sender for good. - Propose, don't act: show me the list and wait for my approval before any filter is created or any label is deleted.
Step 7. Let it read your inbox
The skill scans your recent mail, groups it by sender, and proposes a tier for each. You get the final say on every call.
- In your project, type: “Set up my email tiers.”
- It shows a full list of what to move out and what to keep. Move anything you disagree with.
- When you confirm, it writes your sender list into your instructions and builds a filter file.
It also tidies up. It lists your old, empty or unused labels and offers to delete the ones you don't want — only the ones you approve.
Step 8. Import your filters
The setup run hands you a small filter file. Importing it is what starts moving your chosen senders out of the way.
- Open Gmail Settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Scroll down, click Import filters, and choose the file from your setup run.
- Review, then Create filters. Your lanes are live.
Why this is the whole trick. These run for free inside Gmail, instantly, even when Claude is closed. No filter match means it stays in your inbox. No guessing, and nothing reading your mail one message at a time.
Step 9. Schedule the weekly check
- In your project, create a scheduled task.
- Set it for your chosen day, first thing in the morning.
- Instruction: Run my weekly email tier check.
It reads your 0 · Fix flags first and learns from them, suggests filters for obvious new noise, and flags anything that might have been buried. It proposes; you approve. It never sends and never deletes.
Step 10. Living with it
- Got something wrong? Slap 0 · Fix on it in your inbox. The next run corrects that sender for good and clears the flag. That tag is how you train it.
- Read your inbox like normal. It now holds only what needs you, plus the few reads you chose to keep.
- Visit your lanes when you have time. They sit at the top of your sidebar — your read-when-I-can pile, one click away.
It grows with you
Every correction sticks, and the weekly check keeps your filters current — not a one-time cleanup that's useless in three months. Your inbox is action-first, your good newsletters stay within reach, and the noise quietly files itself.

Three more that clear the week.
The three things everyone asks.
Does it delete anything?
Never. Claude is given permission to read, label and archive — not to send and not to delete. Every move is reversible, including the unused labels it offers to clean up, which it only touches with your approval.
What if it sorts something wrong?
Put the 0 · Fix label on it in your inbox. The next weekly check reads those flags first, corrects that sender for good, and clears the flag. That label is how you train it.
Will this work with Outlook?
No, and that's a deliberate choice. The whole system rides on Gmail's own filters, which run instantly and free inside Gmail even when Claude is closed. Rebuilding that across a dozen mail apps would make it fragile.
